William Sharpe, in his Chatfield Family Genealogy, lists Oliver as one of five members of the Chatfield family who served in the American Revolution.
He was in the Third Company of the First Regiment, serving under
Jabez Thompson,, in a tour of duty which encompassed Harlem, New York, the Great Lakes and Montreal.
This tour of duty lasted from May 19 to December 2. This discharge date is several weeks prior to the release of most of the men in the unit. It may be an indication that Chatfield had suffered one of the illnesses which was common in the unit and was discharged early for that reason.
However, Chatfield re-enlisted in Captain Johnson's Company of Col. Douglas' Regiment, Fifth Battalion in June of 1776, and served there until December 25th. During that time the Regiment was at the Battle of Long Island on August 27 and engaged in the retreat to New York on August 29 and 30. The company was in New York at the time of the British attack on September 15 and was again forced to retreat. The unit also saw service at the Battle of White Plains on October 28.
Oliver Chatfield also had duty as a guard at Horseneck in Derby.
He had two wives, the first named Abiah, and his second, Zerviah. His children were Oliver 2nd, born October 16, 1758; Daniel, born January 16, 1761; Patience, born March 2, 1765; Abijah, born October 5, 1767; Elizabeth, born November 22, 1769; and Joseph, born June 30,1772.

David Johnson:
David Johnson is listed as one of those who marched from Derby to the relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm. It is difficult to trace the military career of this man with certainty - because the name was common and a number of men had signed on for Revolutionary service with that name. Several David Johnsons listed their residence as Derby.
The David Johnson who marched to Boston was born in 1756. He is buried in Pines Bridge Cemetery, Beacon Falls. Of his military record, we know the same David Johnson who marched from Derby to Boston also served in General Waterbury's State Brigade.
