Captain Nathaniel Johnson:
Captain Nathaniel Johnson led a group of men primarily from the areas which later became Seymour and Beacon Falls. He is buried in Pines Bridge Cemetery, Beacon Falls. He was the great grandson of the Col. Ebenezer Johnson who freed his Indian slave Toby.
Captain Nathaniel Johnson was the son of Alexander and Hannah (Riggs) Johnson, and married Rebecca Parsons in 1779. He resided on the east side of the Naugatuck River just over the Ansonia Town Line, apparently moving to the Beacon Falls area later in life. He was born in 1758 and died in September, 1845, at the age of 87. At the time of the Lexington Alarm he was 23 years old.
Johnson's name appears in Derby Town records in relation to the Revolutionary War efforts. In December of 1778 he was named to a committee to provide clothing for the soldiers. In 1782, Johnson was authorized to collect the tax which had been laid by the town to collect the soldier's bounties. He also served as a member of the committee of enlistment.
Johnson saw further service in the American Revolution after his march to Lexington. He is listed as a Captain of the First Company of General Wadsworth's Brigade, Fifth Battalion, which was raised in June of 1776 to reinforce Washington's army at New York. The group served in the city and was in the battle of Long Island and the retreat back to New York. In October, the unit was in the Battle of White Plains. The term of service was from June, 1776 through December 25, 1776.
Nathaniel Johnson remained in this vicinity after the American Revolution and was one of the early workers in Trinity Episcopal Church, Seymour. He was named to a committee to furnish materials for the building of the first church, by an early meeting of that church on February 27, 1797. He was also named to a committee on January 28, 1816 to raise funds so that the church could be completed and consecrated.
