Whereupon it was
voted by the meeting that Mr. David McEwen, Elias Scott,
Abel Wheeler,
Esq., and Harvey Osborn be a committee to inquire and search
after and
obtain if possible said body of said Towner and when
obtained to
deliver the same to same's relatives in as good a condition
as may be;
and also to advise with and assist the Grand Juror of this
town in
finding out and apprehending the bodies of the perpetrators
of said
crime; and provided they should not succeed in finding and
obtaining
said dead body and in apprehending the bodies before the
25th day of
March. next, it shall be the duty of said committee to
consult with the
selectmen of neighboring towns in this state and such other
persons as
they may think proper respecting said subject, petitioning
the Governor
of this state to issue a Proclamation offering such reward
as his
excellency may think proper for the apprehending of said
offenders.
And also, in said consultation to take
into
consideration the expedience of annihilating the institution
or
corporation of the medical college in New Haven, and the
most effectual
legal means to accomplish the same.
Report to be made to this meeting on
Freeman's Day
in April next."
THE EARLY TOWN MEETING SPOKE ON NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ISSUES.
The inhabitants of the new town were also unafraid to speak their mind on issues of national and international importance. Listed below are the minutes of a Freeman's meeting, dated April 11, 1808, expressing the disapproval of the embargo act:
"Voted that the Inhabitants of the Town of Oxford do disapprove of the laws laying an embargo upon the commerce of the United States and that it is their wish that all proper measures may be taken for the purpose of having said law repealed."It was also voted at that meeting that the selectmen should prepare and direct a petition to the President of
