On February 19, 1749, Pero was baptized in the Congregational Church in Oxford. On January 15, 1750, Phillis was baptized in the same church. Both being servants or slaves of one James Wheler. On June 30, 1747, Pero and Phillis had been married in the church and in the year 1779 they had their daughter Desire baptized. Pero was taken into full membership in the church on February 19, 1758-59 and died and was buried from the church on April 13, 1789.It is clear that in Pero's life the church was open to him, his wife and child.
The following accounts will show that Pero was not an exception:October 1, 1777, "Roger, Negro, and Beck, Negro wench" were married.

November 27, 1745, Peter, Negro Servant to the Knowles, received to Communion from the Pastor and Church of Christ in Southbury. (Isaac and Martha Knowles).
April 3, 1765. Peter, Negro, dismissed and recommended to the church at Amity.
Tobias and Rachel, Negro servants to Capt. John Wooster, married June 19, 1776.
Jethro Martain, Negro, to Olive, Negro, married December 31, 1788.
Pal, a Negro boy and servant to David Johnson, died in the 5th year of his age, May 12, 1766.
Jenne, Negro Servant child to David Johnson, -21st year, June, 1773.
Huldah, Negro servant to Decon Ebenezr Riggs, died in the 9th month of her age, May 21, 1818.
