AN OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF EDUCATION OF CHILDREN IN OXFORD.
Oxford's first schools were established by the Congregational Society, when the parish in 1748 voted to hire a school master.
The teacher was to instruct pupils for three months, one each at the three sections of the parish. One month session was to be held at the Sabbath Day house, one on Quaker Farms road, and another in the eastern part of the parish.
By 1822, the schools had developed into a district system, with fourteen districts included in records of payment kept by Abel Wheeler, Esq., treasurer. The receipts show that dividends were paid with town funds twice yearly -- a March dividend paid in April and an October dividend paid in January of the following year.
