    The early records of the First School District in Oxford have been preserved, and a study of the minutes of that group's meetings gives an idea of the work of district school committees throughout the town.


"At a legal meeting of the first school district held at schoolhouse Oct. 11th, 1825:
    Chosen:
Chauncy M. Hatch, Moderator
Sherman Buckingham, Clerk
Jessie Joh, Treasurer
Calvin Leavenworth, Collector.

1. Voted that Mr. Wilcox be accepted as a teacher in the first district for the ensuing winter, provided he can be obtained for twelve dollars per month.
2. Voted that David Candee, Jesse Joy, Daniel Tucker, be a committee to examine the school bills.
3. Voted that David Candee, Horace Candee be assistant committees.
4. Voted that the price of wood two dollars per cord for merchantable wood.
5. Voted that the price for cutting and splitting with a suitable proportion for the stove be fifty cents per cord.
6. Voted that board for the ensuing winter be one dollar and fifty cents per week.
7. Voted that the committee be empowered to employ Miss Talmadge for the ensuing summer, provided she can be obtained for $1.25 per week.

Voted that a book be purchased for the treasurer and the expense be put in the ensuing winter bill.
Voted that the collector settle his bill with the treasurer for Thirty days from the date of his warrant.
Voted that this meeting be dismissed.

    At a subsequent meeting held in December, 1825, the meeting voted to appoint a committee to procure an assistant teacher. In April of the next year Mr. N.J. Wilcoxson was hired to teach, with the assistant teacher to continue with him.

    At a meeting held in 1826, the district voted that the public money should be proportioned between the school in the district according to the number of scholars sent to each, and the remaining expenses to be paid by the proprietors.
    They also voted that school should start on the first Monday in November and continue for five months.
