the Eighth district for 1822, the year following, are listed

From this, it would appear that the
district was of
average size, and one may surmise the the 1821 records have
been lost.

Members
of the School Society were paid
for their work in those times, unlike our present unpaid Board
of
Education.

It is not recorded why the committee members received twice as much as the chairman.Abel Wheeler, treasurer of the society, $14.00

From the early records, it appears that the school society had responsibility for distributing the town's share of reserve funds for schools, but that the actual handling of the education was left to the district school committee.
