OXFORD HOTELS AND TAVERNS
The above photo is a picture of the Oxford House, which was a stage coach stop in Oxford at one time. It was the scene of Oxford's Charter Day luncheon on the occasion of the town's 175th anniversary.
In the early days, Oxford hotels were under the control of the Civil Authority, a joint commission composed of the selectmen, constables and the Grand Juror.
Early town records show that on the 4th day of January, 1802 six tavern keepers were approved.
They were as follows: Josiah Washband, Ruben Bunnell, Daniel Cande, Abel Watras, Nathaniel John, and Ward Garnet.
