following our path. During the
next
night, the robbers feeling secure in British territory, and
having
fallen asleep, were taken captive by the colonial militia.
At first they thought that I was part of
the
conspiracy, and I was taken with the others to Newgate Prison
in
Simsbury. Eventually the authorities in Connecticut learned
the truth
and I was allowed to return home as a hero.
I was welcomed back to Gunntown and to
Oxford with
open arms, and I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed my
reception as a
local war hero. My only regret was that being otherwise
occupied, I
never had the opportunity to answer the call of the bell, the
horseman
or the drum.
